Description:
Common Name: Horse Mushroom Cap: Cap 6-21 cm broad, Whitish, small scaly patches, 3-5 inches. Often slightly clavate at the base, concolorous with the cap, the ring is formed of a double membrane, the lower splitting into a star-shape around the stem. Flesh: flesh white, unchanging or yellowing slightly, thick, firm, but soft in age; odor and taste of anise when fresh. Gills: Pink when young, turning brown. Gills close, free. Spore Print: spore print chocolate-brown. Stalk: Stipe 4-14 cm tall Fruiting: fruiting from late fall to early winter. Range: In arcs and rings in grassy areas, e.g. playing fields, pastures; Edibility: Great edible. Look-alikes: Other Agaricus species, also be careful not to confuse young buttons with Amanitas! Comments: Agaricus arvensis is characterized by a cream-colored cap, free blackish gills, sweet odor (best observed in young, fresh material), grassland habit, and tendency to discolor yellow slowly when bruised or in KOH.
