False Morels
Some false Morels are edible some with caution, some poisonous. Verpa Bohemica, or Wrinkled Thimble-Cap, which is a false Morel, is common, especially in conifer forests. They appear early, along with true Black Morels. Eat with extreme caution. Gyromitra Esculenta, also known as beefsteak Morel, or Lorchel has a brain like appearance. I do not recommend eating this mushroom. Toxins do exist in them, some people are not affected, some boil out the toxins. I personally don't want to take the chance. The National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms has a good reference to these false Morels, but if you look closely, in the Gyromitra species, which they list about five varieties, there is not a huge amount of difference from one to another. They indicate that one variety is most definitely poisonous, and others are "choice with caution" If you look at their photo of the poisonous one versus choice with caution, I don't see much of a difference, if any. Be careful! I recommend if you insist on eating these, and are not experienced, that you have a local mycologist professional take a look at them first.
