Landscape Morels

These mainly occur in the Western States. I have had reports from California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Colorado, and most recently as far East as Minnesota.

Morchella rufobrunnea

This species was described from Mexico by Gastón Guzmán and Fidel Tapia in 1998. DNA testing of several MDCP collections from landscaping sites in California has revealed them to be the same species. Since the mushroom is very distinct, it is fairly clear that Morchella rufobrunnea is the correct name for the species described by western authors as "Morchella deliciosa" - (Info from mushroomexpert.com)

February 27th, 2005: I was driving through my local Starbuck's Coffee drivethrough, when I saw what appeared to be a gaggle of Morels. There does not appear to be an overhanging skirt. Can you confirm this for me? I am in Rocklin, CA which is just north of Sacramento. Thanks! Bruce Newland. You have a very nice assortment of Landscape Morels! Lucky You!. Enjoy them! I wish you had taken a shot of them with the Starbucks in the background! Neat!- Chris M
