Jan. 27th, 2001: I found several LBJ's (Little Brown Jobs), I haven't worked with them except to get scruffy spore prints but initial impressions are: Gallerina, Entaloma, Marasmius, and one little red Russula. Then I found a Chorogomphis, a copper colored edible species that I've always found associated with Slippery Jack, Suillus brevipes, our object of hunt. Then I did a dog walk along where I've found them both before and found Chorogophus but no Suillus. Happy Hunting, KarGar. Gainesville, Florida
Feb. 5th, 2001: Anthony Tassinello, found: black trumpets, hedgehogs, yellowfoot, general location: Mendocino County, CA, Growing Conditions: The usual stuff...tan oak, huckleberry bushes, redwood and pine. Additional Comments: Hey Chris...It has been a fantastic Chanterelle year thus far in the Bay Area. Last week a freind and I were able to bag 26# in two hours but that was then...today was all about the elusive and beautiful black trumpet. They can truly be hunted up the North Coast as we found about 7# in 5 hours with some hogs and yellow foot as well. Now 7 #'s may not sound like much but think about the volume of seven pounds of feathers :^) You get the picture. Also found my first Russula Xerampolina or Shrimp Russula as it is called...I'll let you know how delish it is. We need more rain as it has been 70*+ the last few days I think the best trumpet days are still in front of us. Can't wait to hit the Sierras for morels in April.

No association with trees or buried wood that I could see, anyway. Single or in small groups.. The usual A. Camperstris were in fairy rings last fall. First time I had seen that with Meadow Mushrooms. Additional Comments: Last fall, I found at least four distinct species of Agaricus. None of these are in any of my books but were unmistakeble for the genus. Brown spore print, a ring and detached gills. The different species were distinct in size, gill spacing, the color and other characteristics of the cap (some smooth, some with scales). One had a hollow stipe. Another was really large..stipe about 5 inches and a cap some 8 inches in diameter. Oh, and all were absolutely delicious! Taste and texture similar to Portabellas, but stronger.

About 35, ranging from 1 to 4 inches were growing in the garden bark that I had put down three years ago. I'm off to look for more, maybe in the backyard.

Predominately Ashe juniper vegetation with some oak. Open area. We have had long periods of cool, cloudy, wetter than normal weather. I did not think Morchella sp occurred in this region. Do they? William, it certainly is not a common occurence in your neck of the woods, (San Antonio area) . So you should feel lucky. Have you ever found them in the past at this location? Keep in touch with your progress..... -Chris M.

March 12th, 2001: Texas has struck again! (BILL & PAT S.), I am sending you a photograph of the morel we found here in the Texas Hill Country. Let me know if you receive it Ok, as I have only had my digital camera for a couple of months and have had problems sending photos by e-mail. I have numerous other photographs. We were able to find enough morels to have a small serving for 8 people last night. All are still doing well today, so I guess my ID was good. We had Thunderstorms last night. Today is much cooler (probably low in upper 40's tonigh) and clear. We might not get rain for awhile, so it will be interesting to see how long the morels last. I was able to find two colonies in back of my house tonight.
March 12th, 2001: Dennis Michaels, found morels, general location: Near the beach in Imperial Beach, Ca. Mar. 12th Growing Conditions: Parking lot planter area a 1/2 block from the ocean. In decorative wood chips against the cement bourder {4" high) Additional Comments: Please e-mail me at IxBxLOCO @aol.com if this is an unusual find like I think it was. I just took some pictures. The biggest had a 2' by 1 1/2" head. Sorry no scanner. The biggest problem I had was I was relying on 40yr. old memories from mushroom hunting in Mo. Nobody around here knew if they were edible and only a couple of people knew they were morels. I finally called my mom for a recipe, fixed em and ate em. They were delicious. As best I can figure out; the spores were probably in the woodchips and the unusual 2 wk steady rain started them to grow. I checked the rest of the planters and found more; but they are already starting to wilt in the constant sun. I`ve seen plenty of toadstool types but never morels in this area.

March 19th, 2001: Miquel A. Pérez-De-Gregorio writes: Dear Chris, write to you to tell you that this year is being exceptional as soon as the fructification of morels in Catalonia, Spain. The first found the 3-2-01. Never before had seen so soon, though alone were measuring 3 centimeters of high! The 3-4-01 we are finding the first morel "adult" ( M. elata). The 3-15-01 we are finding 3 ( M. elatoides) and 7 (M. deliciosa). The 3-17-01 found another morel (M. delicious). Yesterday, 3-18-01, was a fantastic day therefore were finding 47 (M. deliciosa) and 4 (M. vulgaris). Without doubt this goes to be a very good year, and has not done more than to begin. In Catalonia there is a saying that tells: "Per St. Josep, la múrgola treu el bec", that translated to the english would be : "By St. Joseph, the morel withdrew the peak". "Múrgola" is the popular name of the morels in catalan. Sorry for my elementary english. ;o) ;o)

Tom & Debbie Watt writes: I just found your website. I hunted today for morels. Wow, what a day! In 70 minutes I found 53 morels - that's 1 for every minute and a half of hunting! I have hunted all my life and never found them like I did today. I found them in Sherman, Grayson County, Texas. They were growing in a wooded area that ran alongside a creek bank. There was lots of ground litter from leaves and twigs, with medium sunlight coming through the trees. I found 2 patches of them. The first one, about 10 ft. in diameter, had 15 mushrooms. The second one, a slightly larger area, had about 12. I found 3 morels that were "twins". The rest were scattered throught the woods, with many growing in clumps of 2 or 3. My sister hunted also in another area and in an hour had 23 morels. I have not heard of any other finds in Grayson Cty., although I'm sure there must be.

Todd G, found morels, - general location: My wife and I found several small grey morels here in Oklahoma City. We had been checking our hot spots from last year and finally found some. They were only about an inch and a half tall and very fresh. We found our first morels last year on March 22nd, so it looks like things are about two weeks behind last year. I would guess that the morel season will peak here in central Oklahoma about April 14th, so there is lots of good picking left. Growing Conditions: Found the morels under dead elm trees that produced morels last year. Most of the trees still do not have leaves which makes it very hard to find new dead elms which also do not have leaves.

They were so small and fresh I couldn't even take them. We received about 18" of fresh snow these last two days to blanket a few prime spots around the 5000' and higher elevations. Tomi Oehlschlaeger, found morels, - general location: western Kentucky, Growing Conditions: On the slopes of hilly areas in old growth forest - seemed to find many under Poplars. Additional Comments: We found 400+ morels this weekend!!! Most were yellows and a few blacks. Found only one grey. Do yellows generally come up earlier than greys? No, usually it is blacks, then half frees, and greys, which grow and turn into yellows, then the giants- M.crassipes.-Chris M. Last year we found mostly greys and a few blacks but that was later in the season. We plan to go to Indiana this weekend to try our luck - pray for rain!!! Additional Comments: I previously reported that we had found over 400 morels. Initially, I thought that most of the morels that we found were yellows (They were quite yellow in color). However, after doing some research on the internet (http://www.ux1.eiu.edu/~cfmfk1/mycology/morels.htm), I've decided that most of them were actually large half-frees. This is the first year that we've found this particular kind in such great numbers. Many of them were unusually large. They were quite fragile though, so when picking half-frees, onion sacks aren't necessarily the best choice! Wicker baskets seemed to work better. I'm hoping that finding so many half-frees means that we'll soon start finding yellows and greys! (Let it rain, let it rain, let it rain!!!)P.S. I love this website! Thanks Chris, for being so prompt in your responses and for having such good information! You are welcome!- Chris M.

Well, I returned from hunting morels in Indiana last night. What a disaster! It is the worst year for Morels I have seen for as long as I have ever hunted for them. I looked for 3 hours with my brother in his woods, and only found 2 under dead elm trees. Walked acrossed his field to get to the woods, and was so dry, the dust flew as our feet scraped over the dirt. Extreme drought in Indiana. Thought I would leave early and try higher elevations in Tenn. or N. Carolina, extreme drought there also. No Morels! Dogwoods still blooming, but just dry. Looks like a terrible season for many.... Hope up north - Mich., Wisc., Minn. is plenty wet! - Chris M.

I need to get the proof to send to Chris., Yes! Do it Blane! I can't wait to see them! I believe you also, I just want to see the transformation! -Chris M.

You are quite welcome, Ivan, it was a pleasure to have met you!- Chris M.
Hi Chris, I just read your notes about being in Indiana, and how bad it was and dry. I would have to agree. I haven't been out a lot, but when I did everything was crunchy and dry. Haven't found a thing yet. I was wondering if you think there is still any hope here, if we get a little rain and humidity this week. Or is our morel season caput? Thanks, Christy from central Indiana. Christy, I am sorry to say that I think that even if you get some good rains that the season has nearly passed and it is now over in your area. The vegetation is so high and thick, and the weekend of Easter Sunday may have been the peak, as at that time there was just enough moisture to pop up a few, but not many. There have been too many days with temperatures above 80 and no rain. I am not sure how far East or West the dry area extends, but I know that all the way up I-75 it was very dry from North Georgia all the way to Indiana.-Chris M.
Randall Rogers, found morels, - general location: South of Sigourney Iowa on South Skunk River, Growing Conditions: Toward top of hills in berry thickets, Additional Comments: Mosquito's are terrible and poison ivy is very bad this year. Mushrooms are all over! I picked over 100 in less than a half hour just before dark. Most were grey and some yellow. Most were about 2"-3" high. What are some good remedies for poison ivy prevention and after you get it? The best prevention is to avoid it! I do not get it, so I am never concerned. -Lucky I guess.....-Chris M. Several people have said putting a few lead weights in your pockets help and they are very serious when they say that. It sounds like a story but most people are willing to try anything. Good hunting.

Taylor Lockwood writes: Hi Chris, Here's the latest news: Sunday (Easter) I am now in Tasmania and settled into a little motel/cabins place near the end of the world in the town of Maydeena. I came in last night as the hosts were celebrating the end of Easter and the last tourist crunch of the summer season. It was all family and local friends that came to help clean up/cook up/eat up, fix the washer and dryer, etc. They gave me a place at the table and I entertained everyone with mushroom cards and stories. I've had two full days of looking for mushrooms and although it's not as good as Tasmania can be (watch your step!), I found 70 to 100 species yesterday up on Mt. Field. No worries mate! Monday Had another good day today. Anytime that you can find mushrooms in Australia and not find leeches is a good day! Although it hasn't rained in a bit, the ground is soaked so the fungi are appearing. But once it rains again, out come the leeches. So conditions are great right now although Tasmania can go from sunny to snowing in minutes. Today I found (among many others) a young Bolete with cap and stipe like a Boletus zelleri (MykoWeb has a photo) but with red pores. Also, probably the best find of the day was a dark blue pair of mushrooms that looked like Cortinarius violaceus but with white gills. Stunning! (yes I'm taking lots of photos). There were many others, of course, but those were a couple highlights of the day. I will be seeing a lot of local mycologists on this trip so I should be able to get names for most of these. Thursday It rained big time last night so there's no holding them back now. It is a little nippy at night and the rain left a little snow on the peaks around here but if it doesn't freeze the fruitings will keep going. Friday Went out for a second time to a place called "Growling Swollet". It is a small river that disappears into a limestone cave only to reappear many miles away. It is a stunning sight and growl it does. I went out two days ago and although I got all the way out there, rain kept me from taking all the photos I wanted. This time I found several viscid, blue green Cortinarius as well as many others. The best news of the day: still no leeches! I'm doing well driving on the left side of the road but I still am trying to get in the car on the passenger side. Sunday & Monday Found a wonderful flush of Boletellus obscurecoccineus today. http://www.fungiphoto.com/A/AU01.html One of my all-time favorites. I spent plenty of film on it so I'm sure a have a shot or two. Also a large, white Amanita with very large pyramidal warts. New to me. Wednesday I am now in southeastern Tassie looking out the window over sheep pastures, eucalyptus, and a foggy bay. Last night I did a show for the University here and there was a good turnout and the show was very well received. I am headed for a rain forest walk near Wielangta. It's warmer on this side of the island but as they have had a good drenching this week, I should find something. Friday Well I didn't find anything over there so I'm back up on Mt. Wellington near Hobart. Right now there is a great flush of purple Cortinarius archeri. Sunday It is 4:30 in the morning and too early for logic. I am on the "Spirit of Tasmania" and ready to disembark in Melbourne. I couldn't sleep last night because I drank a cup of coffee yesterday morning, 16 hours before! That's what I get for "quitting" caffeine. I will be headed east toward East Gippsland and maybe north after that. They have had several inches of rain and I am expecting good things to be popping out of the ground. Because I had to get on this boat about 2:00 PM yesterday, I had written off the day for mushroom hunting but there was a little park called "Fern Glade" about 30K from port. There were a few things out there but just as I was heading back I found an incredible bolete. It had a heavily reticulate stipe and was all white except for a sprinkling of yellow on the cap and pink pores. I will be doing a show for the FungiMap people tomorrow so I should have a name for it by then. Until then, it will be the Tasmanian Angel. Miss you all! Wish you were here. Taylor

This is a new "spot" for me this year. Checked old spots also and no signs of anything except a few false morels. Seems dry here too. This was on April 26th...just getting around to reporting.

Blane Hillman, found morels, - general location: Extreme southwest Michigan, Growing Conditions: dead elm trees, Additional Comments: found around 200 yellow morels yesterday. All of them were found around dead elms. It appears because of the 85 degree days we have been having the mushrooms on the edges of the woods are growing very quickly and need to be picked now, as they are drying out, however, the mushrooms in the middle of the woods, in the shade, are growing much slower and are just starting to pop.

BEERSPONNGE, found morels, - general location: Hocking-Licking county's, Growing Conditions: I was sweating to hard to notice dangnabbit , Additional Comments: How long does it take after a rain (finally got some rain yesterday) 2-3 days? It's been a late Spring up until the past few days. We need rain badly - some were drying up already.
Jerry Pokrupa, no morels yet!, Additional Comments: Waiting and patient, snow is gone but the April spring was dry. Daytime temperatures and winds are drying things out too fast. Waiting for first "wake-up" rain. Lead mushroom picker has had two signs already (dreaming morels). In expectation, a dinner of pickeral fillet and last year's chantrelles. Expect to start scouting this coming week end. Canada

Jim Voss writes: Chris, My daughter and I went mushroom'n on Tuesday in the Coralville Reservoir Area near Iowa City, Iowa. We found 2 lbs of yellows under a dead elm tree. My fiancee and I went out the next morning and found at least another lb. of yellows and several grays under another dead elm. I plan to go out in the morning and hopefully find enough for a meal. I have a nephew that lives in Sigourney, Iowa that has 5 sons and they normally find at least 200 lbs. every year. I plan to see them this weekend and talk him out of a few. We just completed a wonderful meal of corn on the cob, steak, and a skillet of mushrooms. Now I'm going to sit back and watch the final episode of survivor. Take care and happy hunting. Jim Voss
Fishhawk, found morels, - general location: Wisconsin, Waukesha county, Growing Conditions: under dead elms, Additional Comments: 35 small greys
Jim writes: Chris, Just to let you know I went out last night and found 9 greys about 2" they are just starting. Location Washington Co, Wisconsin grassy & briar ridge top. It also raind last night and is raining right now with rain predicted through Friday temp, in the 60's. Things are looking good. Schrommer Jim
Gary writes: Hi Chris: Sorry to hear about your small harvest of morels! It has been very dry around the Buffalo area and I haven't spotted one yet. We normally don't find them until Mother's Day in this area. Will keep you informed. Regards, Gary.
Barbara Dow, found a morel, - general location: Benton County, Arkansas, Growing Conditions: near Sycamore tree, in a "holler." Additional Comments: Kept one for one week in vegetable crisper. Then fried it, only one bite size, and became violently ill, dangerously so, 4 hours later. Has anyone any info or ever had such an experience? No previous trouble of any kind, same place, same morel type. A terrible experience! If you have eaten them before with no ill effects, then the one in the fridge must have been spoiled. They normally have a foul odor if they are spoiled. Some people are allergic to Morels, and cannot eat them at all. But is you have had them in the past, then it must be an issolated occurance. -Chris M.
Pat & Rick, found morels, - general location: Tama County in Iowa If I tell you I will have to kill you. Ha Ha, Growing Conditions: Ya mostly on north banks and dead elms, Additional Comments: Hope it lasts from this little cold spell and all the rain we are having this week it is still early we think but every year it gets that way good luck to everyone
Morels and More writes: Chris- Good job on covering the Knoxville Foray! I am in Central Illinois, and this is the most spotty season I can remember. I finally found four yellows on 4/29, after two prior trips out. I spoke to many people in the woods and out with very mixed results. Stories ranged from nothing to two five gallon buckets-what a range!! As the season began we got a three-day freeze, then right back to the upper 70's/lower 80's and back down to the 50's. It has really created an environment where those who have found a specific, usually private, area that is producing continue to find. Low-lying areas were probably hardest hit do the the certain freeze and then wild temperature swings. Now we haven't had rain in a week and a half! Hopefully this weekend will produce for the final hurrah! Happy Hunting! John Stewart, Morels and More is dedicated to the FUN of Morel Mushroom Hunting! http://morelsandmore.com Post your Thoughts and Finds on the Board! http://morelsandmore.community.everyone.net/commun_v3/scripts/topics.pl?NodeID=157253&ClientID=106863
Kimberly Decker, found morels, - general location: Johnson County, Iowa 3 pounds of grays and 2 pounds of yellows so far. Growing Conditions: The grays i found under dead elms and the yellows in the moss and in the dirt on hillsides. Additional Comments: There was not as many grays this year as i usually find. Judy J, found morels, - general location: Stillwater, MN, Growing Conditions: three tiny morels around a dead elm in our yard. , Additional Comments: The conditions in MN look great for a good season.
Lee G, Additional Comments: Hiya Chris.... Thanks for the info you gave to BEERSPONNGE regarding time of show after rain but more importantly that after a few days of mid 80s or higher will end the season.... I think this asnwers a couple other questions I seen today.... We have been over mid 80s for consecutive days for a week or more I think here in St Louis and still very little rain this spring.... I wont feel so bad that I'm not able to get out looking right now because I'm convinced it's over here for this season. Never got to try out my new morel stick! lol.... I bet the good finds will be up in the Ohio Valley area very soon with all the rain/floods and cold they have had up that way in recent weeks.... What do you think Chris?? (Lee thinking out loud.... might want to go steal neighbors up north shrooms.... hehehe) Lee, I think that Mich, Wisc., Minn., and Iowa will havew and are beginning to have a good season.- Chris M.
Sue, found morels, - general location: in southwest wisconsin in a cow pasture under dead elm trees, Growing Conditions: dead elm trees only
fishhawk, found morels, - general location: wisconsin, waukesha county, Growing Conditions: by dead elms, Additional Comments: Found 33 small greys in same area as yesterday.
Dennis Merta, found morels, - general location: Linn County near Cedar Rapids Iowa, Growing Conditions: Found a new dead elm worth 28 grays, another area that is rocky but produced whites(tan) as always more elms, and another area river bottom under river birch trees found almost 4 lbs. Additional Comments: Chris, First time out as work comes first. Found more than normal in the last 3 to 4 years for the first time. Tell people morels do grow as I have witnessed and now have a person doing what I witnessed. Find a young fresh morel and cover with a bucket and watch it grow. I witnessed this and a grey tripled in size in about a week and a half as long as there is moisture. It works if someone dosen't find it and pick it. It grew to about 12 inches but was getting old and crumbly in 2 weeks. Thought you might like to know this. Hope to get out this weekend again. Great Site Chris keep up the great work will also have mushroom finds this fall as I am a fall mushroom hunter also. Thanks, Dennis. If you look back under morel finds archives, you will see we keep this updated year round and post all kinds of mushroom finds! -Chris M.
tom slaymaker, found morels, - general location: cedar rapids iowa , Growing Conditions: exiting i found a nice patch of 50 morels under elms and oaks all big yellows but 6 and they were big greys, Additional Comments: also found a lot of oyster mushrooms very nice
Blake Whitlock, found morels, - general location: We found 4 pound last weekend. (4-28-01) We found three more pounds but most of them were dry and not very good. 5-2-01 We recieved a little bit of rain and found about a dozen fresh ones. 5-3-01 If we don't recieve any rain they are probley done. please give us a little rain lord, Growing Conditions: under and around elm's ash and elms.
The Wells Brothers, found morels, - general location: 1st Trip - April 20 - Ferndale, Washington area and foot of Mount Baker - Grey Morels, More recently (May 2-5) many grey, black and yellow; small (up to 3 inches), season just starting --- southeast South Dakota and NE Nebraska along the Missouri river, Growing Conditions: Lowland areas; in grass and around old fallen/rotten trees. Additional Comments: Good luck everybody!
May 6th, 2001:
Deb from Iowa, found morels, - general location: South of Indianola, Iowa: Sorry can't give you more details, but it was a public area and didn't arrive until after 1:00pm on Friday, May 4th. Didn't weigh them but dumped them in five gallon buckets-we completely filled a little over three buckets. We also found around 8 gallon on Monday April 30th, same location but they were greys at that time, now most are 2-3" yellows. Earliest find this year was April 24th, almost a gallon & 1/2-86 of these so small they fit in a 24oz container. Growing Conditions: In a ditch, both sides covered with trees to top of ditch-empty fields next to ditch. Ditch empties into a small crick. Mostly found them around dead elms or partially dead Oak trees. Most large finds around the Oak trees which I normally don't look under. Also a lot of briar in most of the area, I look like I went thru a glass door. Amazing what a person will do when spotting a lone mushroom 20 feet into thick briar, you can't say forget it, right? Still raining here, has been since Monday the 30th, before that it was very dry. Weather kind of cool, been highs of around 60-65. Most were found on North facing bank, from the very top edge clear to the bottom of the ditch. 93 found walking back up the ditch to the car. I hope we're just beginning, instead of a short season because of our dry spell until this last week. Thanks for the great details of your hunting! This is great! -Chris M.
May 7th, 2001:
Karen, found morels, - general location: Central Illinois, Growing Conditions: Under oak leaves and briar patch, Additional Comments: Really disappointed this year. We bought this farm last fall and I was so excited since we have 5 acres of timber. So far, only found 2 small greys and about 6 morels. All in the same area. Have walked our creek bed, look in grassy areas-no luck. We got rain today and planning on going out tomorrow. Hope to find some soon! Good Luck to all!
jsw, found morels, - general location: Monroe NC down 74 to morgan mill down on left get shoot at have fun, Growing Conditions: in trees nears creek, Additional Comments: dont go by yourself takes two
Steve Dziekan, found morels, and coprinus, atremetarius and agaricus sp. - general location: Colorado River drainage, Garfield Co. Growing Conditions: morchella, esculenta grow in river bottoms under cottonwoods and willows around here, Additional Comments: judging by the size of the leaves on the cottonwoods, I would say these were the first ones to come out; unfortunately it snowed on them the other day and most of them were ruined. However, they did get much needed moisture and I expect to see many more. Found eighteen in good shape, up to about two inches.
vicky, found morels, - general location: Oceana county Michigan, Growing Conditions: old apple trees, Additional Comments: mid size whites
Don Noel, found morels, - general location: Illinois,Henry county,Oqoa, Growing Conditions: by Oak trees
Daniel Boedigheimer, found morels, - general location: Grand Rapids, MN Looked in my good spots with no success only to find two nice blacks in my father-in-laws yard. About the time you think you know something about morels they pop out in somebodys yard. Growing Conditions: Out of the grass in the middle of the yard. Additional Comments: Finding two morels isn't that big of a deal, its the fact that they were growing in the middle of a lawn and fruited before anywhere else(as far as I know) in Itasca county, that makes the find so neat.
David S., found morels, - general location: Southern Oregon, outside of Ashland. Growing Conditions: Old growth wooded areas. Lots of old rotting wood. Additional Comments: Always been great in these areas around here. Tough this year, though. We're in the worst drought since 1977 here, and it shows. At this altitude (4000-5000 ft) it's still early, but dry as a bone and without rain it looks bleak.
: Dennis Merta, found morels, - general location: Linn County east of Cedar Rapids, Growing Conditions: River bottom around river birch trees, Additional Comments: 2 1/2 lbs. (80) morels yellow and fresh because of rain in the past couple days found May 6 in morning
Jeff Clayton, found morels, - general location: Wisconsin, Kewaskum, Washington county, Growing Conditions: under dead elms on hills
Betty Boeglin, found morels, Granville, OH, Growing Conditions: around a grove of elms; found 1 large and 4 smaller ones--small ones were the very late ones, had long stems but very small spongy tops. I have always found these at the end of the season. These were in my daughter's woods surrounding her house. The ground was fairly damp; but goundcover was very dry. This is my first time hunting there; I'm looking forward to next year. However; I told her to check if it rains soon. Central IN was very disappointing this year, as you know Chris. BUT--if it rains tonite, I have a spot to check--You never know!
Dirtwhiz writes: dear chris, about 7 days before easter and 4-5 days after seemed to be the extent of our season for hunting morels. at first we had heat but no rain, then we got rain, but it got so cold we had 2-3 days of frost, then it warmed up but no rain. After not finding any the previous 2 years i was delighted to find what i did, however if conditions were more favorable folks in this area should have been able to find morels until mothers day.
Rick, found morels, - general location: Andulisia, Illinois, Growing Conditions: Everywhere, Additional Comments: Black, greys and coffee can size yellows!
Belva Hewett writes: Yes----I went to Big Rapids this weekend --picked 120 black morels--strange season--no rain for a month . a lot of the morels were dry--but then --I picked a lot of fresh ones to...can't figure it out ...
Schroomer Jim, found morels, - general location: Wisconsin, Washington Co. Growing Conditions: Grass & moss covered ridge top with briars and old groth sumac, Additional Comments: Found 114 mostly greys 2 to 4 inches tall, left about 20 to 30 that were only 3/4 to 1 inch tall. still raining with temps in the 60's
May 8th, 2001:
Fred, found morels, - general location: I found 8 rust colored Morels in my backyard this weekend, one of them was growing through a crack in the cement in our pool area. I live in Battle Creek, Mi. We are still waiting for rain, then I'm sure they will be out in the woods.machead69@aol.com . I have checked all my favorite places and found lots of other Mushrooms, but no Morels, Growing Conditions: Out in the open 20 30 feet from a dying Elm tree, and an Oak tree. Additional Comments: Anyone else in Michigan reading this, please email me if you are finding them. I go out everyother day now. But it helps to know if they are growing North or South of where I live. I also go up North to the Boyne Falls area around Memorial day and have real good luck up there.
Alan, found morels, - general location: Waukesha county, Wisconsin, Growing Conditions: by dead elms, Additional Comments: Found 22 mostly small greys some yellows
John Ha, found morels, - general location: I hunt the lower Michigan peninsula- last Saturday I found some fresh black morels in the mid- state area but it was kind of dry. I went up north and it was moister but had to look hard, found more shrooms. Got a couple hundred but most came from a couple of groves I stumbled across. I found them mostly around black ash trees but had a friend that blew my count in the weeds hunting in populars. I also found 14 big white morels ., Growing Conditions: Southern Michigan Sunday afternoon around an old dead elm tree, they were kinda dry but tasted fantastic.
Richard Radcliffe, found morels, - general location: California, Sierra Nevada, Growing Conditions: Under mixed pines. Additional Comments: Chris, thank you for your great website! It is my pleasure! - Chris M. I have logged on for weeks and seen my fellow Morel Maniacs from the midwest tell of their season (which sounds pretty mixed). Now it's time for CALIFORNIA to weight in. Well, basically we ROCKED. Found about 18 lb of prime Morchella Elata, or as we call "blackies", up in the mountains this weekend. My wife Darla, and my twin sons Nick and Ben were the "team". The best thing of all is that, as much as I am into sharing the mushrooms from a culinary standpoint, I don't like to share my "spots", and somehow, we have never had any competition from other hunters. The "blackies" out here in California and big, fresh, easy to spot and really plentiful, but as our great mushroom "guru" from California (David Arora: "Mushrooms Demystified" has often said, TIMING IS EVERYTHING. I'm now spending my mornings before work drying the Morels, and evenings serving meals like: Mesquite Grilled Sirloin with Black Morels and Shallot cream sauce, Watercress and cherry tomato salad. Long live Morels!!, and good luck to all my brothers and sisters out there in places where Morels are still popping! We're done for this year, and will be looking forward to the first "Porcinis" (Boletus Edulus) of autumn!
Mike , found morels, - general location: Found grey and yellow morels in amd near rochester michigan. Growing Conditions: Mostly under dead elm and ash trees in low areas. Look for areas that hold moisture well since it has been dry. Additional Comments: Found about 300 morels, mostly small to medium size. Probably less than 7 lbs. though since they were small. Conditions looked good for further fruiting if there is rain.
Mike, found morels, - general location: On the Missouri River in Northwest Iowa. Two of us found over 10 lbs each in about 90 minutes. Growing Conditions: Had to take the boat out so we could get to an area where beavers had felled some large cottonwood trees. That's where they were thick. Additional Comments: I was beginning to think the year was going to be a bust. We had had plenty of rain earlier in the spring then several consecutive days of 80 degrees plus. I thought conditions were perfect but each day I would find only a dozen or so. Then last week it rained every day. So we picked 'em in the rain on friday May 4. what a blast!!
mark elmore, found morels, - general location: Fallbrook CA in San Diego County, Growing Conditions: found them unexpectedly in my courtyard, which i later realized had perfect growing conditions. damp from daily watering, occasional sunlight and wood chips. Additional Comments: After growing up in Southern Illinois, i have lots of memories of hunting for morels, but never expected to find any in california.
Paul Sonowski, found morels, - general location: Near Danville, Ohio in Knox County. Found well over 10 pounds at this spot last year. Growing Conditions: Elms, on damp shadded hillside , Additional Comments: Chris? I am a 20 year veteran to morel hunting in the central ohio area. I think that this is one of, if not the worst, year i've ever seen. Last weekend i was hunting at an old reliable spot and found nothing. The neighbors let me know that the area has had adequate rain but the temps were in the mid 80's. My question is, could the high substained temps cause the shrooms to stop producing? If so will the cooler temps and more rain reverse the effects with the season not completely over in this area. There may be a few late ones pop, now that you had some rain, but not likely. Once you have a steady temperature of about 84 degrees for several days in a row, that usually ends the season.- Chris M.
BOB MILLER, found some morels, didn't say where/.......
May 9th, 2001:

Judy J, found morels, - general location: found 10 pds over the last 5 days in Western WI and SE MN, Whitewater State Park, Growing Conditions: Around dead elms, Additional Comments: It's been a great season here so far.
Alan, found morels, - general location: waukesha county, wisconsin, Growing Conditions: by dead elms, Additional Comments: My daghter Kelly And I found fifty yellows and greys.
Maureen Burchell, found morels, - general location: Found 13 small grays, on monday, the 6th... 15 3-4 inchers on wed, the 8th..We are from Dalton,Ohio, 12 miles west of Canton, been strange weather, not enough rain yet, but i think theres hope for us yet.....Happy hunting, everyone...... Growing Conditions: under a small maple, lots of may apples.
Tim, found : morels, - general location: Found morels in oaks small yet first ones found here this year waushara county wisconsin, Growing Conditions: south side oaks
Fred, found morels, - general location: I found 20 white morels tonight after work, it was a beautiful thing. I had to look real hard for them. They are just starting to come up. We had a little rain, but could use some more. I know there are hundreds of them out there but you can't get into the peoples woods to pick them, without getting shot. Its almost worth it. I think I could dodge bullets and pick mushrooms at the same time! Growing Conditions: Found these around dead elms. The area around them was kind of sandy. All were on the North facing side of the hill. Additional Comments: I stopped and bent down low to the ground and really focused on the area around me, then I could see them, just starting to poke their little heads up through the grass. You really have to stop and look hard for them sometimes. Its great to find the really big ones, but my favorites are the small whites, around 2"-3" tall. Rolled in flour, fried in butter. Doesn't get much better than that in my opinion.
Tom Bashara, found morels, - general location: Eagan, Minnesota, Growing Conditions: Dried-up river bed, Additional Comments: I actually thought we were out too early for this part of Minnesota, so finding the six we did was exciting. The expected rain should help hunting tomorrow. We don't seem to find the big yellows growing in the same place as the smaller blacks. Anyone have any insight on why this is?

Had found a tiny one 3 weeks ago, but dried up. Think I got them by pouring spore laden water in my compost pile two years ago after a very small find. Now up in the garden. Growing Conditions: Conditions were quite unexpected: under Japanese smoke tree, amonst swamp milkweed. Just luck they took to the compost. Look out Fungi Perfecti - I have a morel growing method!

May 11th, 2001:.
Corey, found morels, - general location: Rockford Illinois, Growing Conditions: South-southwest facing hills. Found around the most picture perfect dead elms. Additional Comments: Have been hunting for the last 2 weeks and I have found about 15lbs (which is not too bad due to the fact that I am a new dad and can't get out for very long). Went out Sunday and found 5-7lbs of nice big yellows (6-7") Have not found any in my olds haunts, but I have discovered a number of new productive spots. I seem to find all my Morels aroud dead elms. I know that many people find Morels around oak trees and ash trees. How can I identify an ash tree by the bark alone before the buds come out? Corey, in the member areas, I have a whole section on tree identification, there are several photos of ashe trees, just ther bark. -Chris M. Lastly, for those of you that find Morels aound oak and ash trees, what else can I look for that seems to make these two tree species productive? (ie, soil type, moisture, plants, ect...) Thanx and good hunting
Jim Navrtail, found morels, - general location: McLeod County Silver Lake, MN , Growing Conditions: Under Elm and Poplar very close to water
Anthony Tassinello, found morels, - general location: El Dorado county/Amador county CA-Sierra Nevada range 3250'-5150' It helps to have a GPS! Growing Conditions: Logged parcels of pine and manzanita, control burns, hotter burnt patches. They seem to be fruit in a latitude rather than the mats I have found in past seasons. Additional Comments: Most Black morels, a few Blondes as well. Here is my concern Chris. Myself and two buddies, which I reguard as very good morel hunters only managed to find about 5# after going to no less than 8 spots where there were early fruiting signs 10 days ago. Orange peel fungus(Aleuria aurantia) mostly with Crown cup fungus (Sacrosphaera crassa) shrumping like porcini and lupine blossoms. I feel like this is not such a great season thus far...you go to where they should be and they just aren't there. In any profusion anyway. It has been extremely hot in the mountains and no rain for weeks. I hope something gives...only found about 40# so far this year...no morel images when I try to fall asleep :^( Please keep all the CA reports coming! And beg for altitude readings! Love the site. P.S. Found two seperate fruitings of Springtime Coccora(Amanita Calyptrata) see MD plate 63 paler!
Claviceps, found Pleurotus ostreatus; Polyporous squamosus; Pluteus spp., - general location: NY--Westchester County (immediately north of NYC). Growing Conditions: On dead hardwoods (beech, maple?--hard to say...very dead) in lowlands and slopes. Additional Comments: I was looking for morels, of course, but it's so darn dry! Where is the rain????????????????????! The Oyster's were full of fungus flies and their rather disgusting wiggly predecessors. The Pluteus spp. was rather desiccated, but still producing spores for a spore print. Lots of Polyporous squamosus in the lowlands.
Terry, found morels, - general location: Mesick,MI are 5/9 and 5/10. My father and I found #140 in 1 1/2 days of beautiful hunting. 75 degrees and low humidity. we found 20% blacks,30% greys and 50% yellows. Our first trip to MI. The festival was getting started with a cold front which will likely hurt. We had a great stay at the Mushrooom Cap Motel. They were having a contest for the largest black for the week and they had two 7" at the IGA in Mesick. Large concentrations were hard to find, but it was still a great trip, MI was more productive than OH this year. Now time for boating on Lake Erie. I appreciate everyone's reports this year. regards, Terry

John Ha, found morels, - general location: Last week-end I found 550 morels but it was hard hunting because I had to look for blacks, grays, whites and floppies. I have never had to concentrate on all four kinds at the same time before. Growing Conditions: I was hunting in northern Michigan in hardwoods. I found stumps at most of the locations that I found morels. Somebody beat me to some of the shrooms but I beat them this time! Everybody say YEAH!!!
Jerry Pokrupa, found false morels, - general location: North of Red Lake, Ontario , Growing Conditions: Old growth spruce, sand ridges, Additional Comments: Scouting yesterday to north of Red Lake. 3 1/2 (4L) baskets(gyromitra esculenta), enough to dry for the winter (not edible warning) Long weekend coming up, heading south again. Elena, found morels, - general location: Acton, California about 15 miles south of Palmdale, Growing Conditions: In my front yard amongst the wood chips. Didn't know what they were and removed and trashed the first batch (oops). My neighbor told me what they were. Now we have a second group of quite a few. Some are growing in large clumps. Additional Comments: Still nervous about eating. How can I tell for sure that they are not false morels? Elena, It is a common occurence for me to get reports, especially from California, of Morels growing in wood mulch in flower beds. Evidentally, the spores are in the mulch, and it provides a great growing condition. You are lucky! Send me some photos if possible! You must be a little higher in elevation, as I had a report this year in California in early March!- Chris M. I didn't expect to find them here after only reading about them in the midwest.
May 18th, 2001:
Ed Verplancke, found lactarius, - general location: Missoula, Montana, Growing Conditions: under cottonwoods, Additional Comments: boy they are good with elk steak
May 19th, 2001: Billy, found morels, - general location: North Idaho, Growing Conditions: Broken sunlight around loggers burn piles and along the drip line around fir trees. Some greys found in the tracks that the loggers equipment made a couple of years ago. Additional Comments: I hope that this year is as good as last but North Idaho has wacky weather and sometimes the combo of moisture and warmth is not quite right but so far this season have found a couple hundred greys. We hunted and found around fifty last week in a full blown snowstorm! Of course the snow did not cause us any distress, we were too busy with our heads down finding our sponge-like friends.
May 21st, 2001: Janet Lofstuen, found morels, - general location: Chaska, Carver County, Minnesota (more specifically, Augusta, MN) Growing Conditions: We live on a wooded 2 1/2 acre lot, primarily maple and oak some smaller varieties as well. We found them mostly by the fenceline (dappled light). Our lot was once used as a cow pasture many years ago but has since been allowed to grow over with underbrush etc. There are many years of decayed leaves and trees, these mushrooms were not necessarily found by stumps but in rich loose soil. We found about 35 mushrooms yesterday and will be hunting some more today. Some mushrooms as large as 6 inches.
May 23rd, 2001: (Dancing Pines Ranch) writes: Hi Chris, I am not a member yet but am just learning about morels. Last year Mt. Hull in Okanogan County, Washington had a terrible forest fire from Oroville down to Ellisforde area. This year, someone turned up and lo and behold, taught us a few things about morels! Seems they are abounding here this spring. Our spring has been late but these morels are just now popping up everywhere. Our visitor picked 125 mushrooms in a short amount of time and with a physical disability.....is that good? Thanks, Marta . This sounds really good, Marta, Have fun!- Chris M.
May 24th, 2001: Sherry M, found morels, - general location: Went to homestate of Michigan (now in PA), the week after Mother's day where last year we did much better but found about a dozen large yellow and one lonely but still in good shape black and one old dried up black also. We were in poplars and ash tree areas. Not as good as I had hoped but we still enjoyed the few we had and it was fun. Additional Comments: Have you any reports from the National Festival in Boyne, Mi? Not yest, still waiting on someone to email me with the details. Overall, how would you rate this year so far? The worst year on record in much of the Midwest, Indiana, OH, Ill., PA, NY hit hard by the drought. Further north- Mich., Minn., and Wisc., seems to be in good shape, also Iowa. But not a good year for most. I do have some Fresh Morels available to order, but supply is limited. - Chris M.

May 26th, 2001: Steve Dziekan, found verpa bohemica, - general location: Eagle county, near Vail, CO. 8500' elevation, Growing Conditions: Aspen grove, near water. Additional Comments: It is amazing to me how many people are out there picking and eating wild mushrooms and don't know the difference between a Morel and a Verpa. Many people are allergic to Verpas. Many poisonings have been reported over the years. No fatalities, yet.Buy a good field guide, or two.
May 26th, 2001: SANDY SIMMONS, found black Morels, - general location: Lake of the Woods, central Oregon, Growing Conditions: in old select logging areas in the tracks of logging equipment. Additional Comments: Didn't do so well this year. We were to late for the season. Went the 3rd week of May. The first two days we did okay but after that it was too hot and dry. In the 90's. As soon as they would pop the bugs had them. Got most of them at over 4500 feet. Our van caught on fire on the way home and had to leave it in Idaho. We live on the Olympic Peninsula in Wash. The season here was not good. Undaunted. We will replace the van and be there again next year. Sure would like to hear from some more Western pickers.
May 28th, 2001: Anthony Tassinello, found morels, - general location: Stanislaus National Forest 45 miles northeast of Sonora CA, Growing Conditions: Burnt pine forest at the 6200' elevation. Mostly in and around creeks and still moist gulleys., Additional Comments: Just what will you do for fresh morels? Drive four hours each way then hike thru slash, off trail for two miles, crossing creeks, jumping stumps and snags to search a 760 acre burn from August 2000. Results were lucrative with about 300 blacks in all...I don't know I'm guessing about 6-7 pounds. Along the way managed to find about 5 Sierran Puff Balls among the snow plants as well as an unidentifiable Bolete with pale yellow gills and the sweetest nutty perfume. Almost as fun as losing money at the Indian casino on the way home....
